Circular – Performing Arts Festival has set as a main goal drawing the audience closer to contemporary art creation since its first edition. So, Circular has been promoting artistic residencies in Vila do Conde, thus establishing a direct relationship connecting the creative processes to the local setting. There is a prospect of continuity currently being fulfilled with a programme of educational activities, “Derivas Artísticas” (Artistic Drift), which takes place all year round.

There always has been a focus on experimentation and on questions concerning artistic practices, and in consequence products of artistic creation have been commissioned and co-productions have been established for areas such as dance, performing arts, theatre, music or plastic arts throughout the Festival’s editions.

In the current 5th edition, which will take place between the 19th and the 26th September, Circular presents two parts of the Clean/Décline trilogy by choreographer Marco Berrettini, the premiere of 1999, a musical performance by Gérald Kurdian, and also Utopias, Ciborgues e Outras Casas nas Árvores (Utopias, cyborgs and other treehouses) by Carla Cruz and Uma peça encomendada (A commissioned piece of art) by Joclécio Azevedo, having these last two projects been developed during artistic residencies. Chinoiserie by the theatre company Mala Voadora, and Vice-Royale. Vain-Royale. Vile-Royale by Sónia Baptista, both of which premiered recently, will also be presented at the Festival. The programme for the festival includes talks between the audience and the artists and a book exhibition on performing arts, with the purpose of making Portuguese editorial projects known to the public.
